Marilyn Monroe Red Velvet Pose #2
Marilyn Monroe Red Velvet Pose 2 stands apart for its dramatic, elongated composition, with Marilyn stretched across the red velvet in a way that creates a strong sense of movement and theatricality. The sweeping diagonal lines and flowing folds of the fabric give the image an especially striking visual rhythm.
Its significance extends beyond the original 1949 session. Pose 2 was later selected as the cover image for Tom Kelley’s Studio, a book dedicated to Kelley’s photography, giving this particular photograph an additional place in the visual legacy of his work.
The Red Velvet session was created before Marilyn Monroe became a household name and produced twelve photographs that would become some of Tom Kelley’s most enduring work. One image from the series later appeared in the inaugural issue of Playboy, helping cement the session’s place in American pop culture history.
